Patient

Ola! Tudo fiche?

I hope everyone is having a great week! We had some great experiencias this week. Let me start with the follow up with one of the familias that i wrote about last week. Sergio and Irene... They are awesome. So we went by their house during this week and taught the restauration again for Sergio. He understood and acted like he already believed all these things were true. Then we followed up on how the plans for marriage were going.... NONE. they had done nothing and sergio was still saying how it would be too soon. Well... idk.. i feel like i have changed a little (or a lot) on my mission, but i wasnt going to let that one slide with a nice loving answer that i think might have come in the begginning of my mission. But dont worry, the spirit was still there. But i asked them how long they have been together... 30 years they said... almost 31... Then sister kohlert, sister cardoso, and i started to say that that was high time to start worrying about marriage and that it is not "too soon." We got pretty direct saying that the time would never come to have a huge party or all these big things they want because they arent keeping a commandment of god and they wont be blessed with those things. And then i think he finally understood or changed... or idk, but then we said that we gave them one month to get married and it takes one month to fill out the papers. Then sergio said "it doesnt even take that long." To our surprise!!! IT DOESNT?? Well then... they better get going! haha so he said on monday... after the weekend.. which is today.. he would go take out the papers and start them so that they can get married! YESSSSSSSSSSSSS! We are following up on that tomorrow and i sure hope it happens! I just remember getting so passionate in that lesson and afterwords i was beyond excited! The best part is after sergio said that we all went silent for a little bit... and then he broke the silence and said "Yay.." haha kinda sarcastically but we always say "yay" so i think he was making fun of us but it was funny.

Anyway so that is the story with Sergio and irene. i will try to give little updates each week.

Next is why i put patience on the subject... Well i have realized this week that is a huge weakness of mine. But i always had in my mind that patience was just waiting... well yeah kind of but it is so much more than that. It isnt just waiting things out. But it is enduring through the trials with a good attitude. At times i think i have patience with things but i will see that really i just complain and complain and then when it is finally over i feel good about myself because i didnt give up working or something. But that isnt patience. I cant complain during the hard times! And it all starts with thougths too. I was readying in Mosiah 4:30! We need to watch our thoughts during these times when we need to have patience and that will affect our actions. I have had times here these last few weeks where i have needed to have patience but i havent. So this week in district meeting we really talked about this attribute of christ and i have decided to really watch my thougths and not be negative about things that happen.. it could always be worse. And it isnt even that bad. I am so lucky to be here in cabo verde, healthy, and everything else! So you all check with me on that... i hope i can say that i have been patient during my afflictions :) And i challange all of us to be patient with ourselves, our family, and others, and most of all with the lord and his timing :)

So another thing i need to be patient with... THE HEAT. Ya´ll have NO idea. hahah it is so hot. They call it the heat from africa... The wind is like blowing hot firing air in your face. And the sun... oh the sun! I want to know if there is such a thing as a reverse tan when i get home. I cant even describe how hot it is...but i will say that when i get out of the shower and put on my clothes... it is like my clothes just got out of the dryer.. So i am living in a human drying machine. hahaha love africa.

So i think that is about it. Great week! We also had a baptism of the sweetest girl. Silene! I love her soooo much! :) And her smile afterwards was one for the books. i love being around people who just get it. She has been waiting so long to be baptized and now she finally is and hse is great. She has a goal to finish the book of mormon now and we are going to help her achieve it. :)

Transfer week, I am staying in Santo

So what another week! GUESS WHAT??? I am staying in Santo antao one more transfer baby!! Didnt i tell you i would basically stay here all my mission?? I am hoping for one more to be honest. I hope i spend half my mission here. It is the best island. And the hottest too.... It is getting SUPER hot here. Like i touch my skin and it is like a stove top its so hot. You can imagine it is pretty uncomfortable but  as long as we have lessons and people offer their house to us out of the shade maybe it will be fine. Maybe we can use it as an excuse too... look SUPER hot and exhausted and then they will just have to let us in :)

Haha so anyway yes... not much happened with transfers. Just 2 elders from our district went home... and then one of the girls in our house is training miss Megan Eliason in Monte Sossego, Mindelo. So i will get to see her for zone conference and i am sooooo pumped! She is going to be great :) And then the other sister in our house is getting a mini missionary. So we will see how this goes. Probably will be in a triple for a little bit. haha

So this week i finally finished the Book of Mormon in PT... it was a blessing :) I know it took me forever but i didnt start until like halfway through the second transfer... but i finished and it love it even more in Portuguese...

So next cool thing that happened this week is that we found 3 new families!!! Families are SOOO hard to find here. Nobody wants to learn as a family... its like ... " if my sons wants to talk to you he can, but we wont." Or... " my wife can but i wont." So yeah... but this week we got a family that has been antigo investigator for like ever. The mom is Irene... (they arent married, but no one is so no surprise.) And her boyfriend for 35 or so years... Sergio! Irene is amazing. She always wants to go to church and she has the BIGGEST desire to be baptized but she cant because she isnt living the law of chasity and her boyfreind doesnt want to get married. So we have kinda just told her to keep coming to church and we love her but she isnt progressing so we havent taught her. So we decided to try and teach her husband but he is super flaky and never showed up to our lessons. So they got dropped. The thing is... All their kids except like 2 are members as well. But only the sweet young women, elga, is active. So we passed by this week and found another one of thier kids, Elvis! He is a menos ativo... so we started talking to him and he seemed pretty solid. So during the lesson guess who walks in... SERGIO! We tell him to sit down. he is a little drunk, not completely, but we could smell alcohol. But we end up having a great lesson about marriage! They want a big party... well sergio does... irene just wants to get married. But we made the suggestion that they can get married super cheap with some close friends and not much there and then they can do a party when they have the money. He seemed like that was a good idea. So we just bore our testimonies and marked another day to talk and invited them to church. Well Turns out... SERGIO came to church also!!! It was great. and he even stayed all 3 hours. And then after church we had marked with him and he actually showed up... completely sober this time. He is really changing.

So that was a great thing to see. He says we are just like the other missionaries trying to get them married, but we told him it is because it is something he has to do and he knows it. He really does know it. And he is starting to admit that they need to make plans. So we gave them a calander and told them to start saving up so that they can start the papers. little by little. But the best thing about all of this is seeing ireneºs face during the lessons. She is beaming. She was about ready to leave him so that she could get baptized, but she is so happy to see he is actually thinking about it. We told them they need to start praying together and reading together too. Irene doesnt read so it will be great if sergio starts reading the BOM with her. We have high hopes for this family! They are great. And i can see changes. The next step is getting sergio to stop drinking. But that is going to happen too!

So the next family is someone who came to church last week. And they just showed up. So we started teaching the whole family. We walked up to the door two nights ago to see how thye were doing because we were in the area and we heard one of the sons say "BATISMO" in a loud voice... and then they started talking about how they were going to church the next day. haha we couldnt knock on the door after that. so we waiting about 5 minutes until we stopped giggling with joy! I love seeing our investigators excited. haha

The next family is awesome too... but the wife has fears of marriage because her parents marriage was not good. But she knows its a commandment so we will get there :) Focus on the doctrine.

I know this church is true and is changing lives. And i know when we make inspired goals in our lives the lord is going to help us. WE all can make goals and see the effects. We need to counsel with the lord as we make these goals for our lives as well :)

So yeah.. i think that is all i have. Oh wait... One more thing not so great about this week but that will show how the lord works in amazing ways. Last week as i read emails i skimmed over a bunch but remember reading about a verse in my Dads email. 1 Nephi 15:27. I didnt think much of it until during this week we had a lot of disappointments. Here in Cabo Verde there are ALOT of menos ativos... less atives. And on our way to church i remember passing by 5 of them... each of which had no desire to show up to church. some of them even lied to us by saying they were coming late. Well that hurt my heart a lot. And then all of our appointments fell through the next day. And for the first time in my misison i didnt feel like talking to anyway. No one. I didnt even have the desire to say hi in the street. Because i just felt like everyone is so wicked and they wont listen anyway... i dont know... it was rough. But then the next day during studies i had the feeling to look up that scirpture and remember my dads letter. In that scirpture we see that Lehi focused on the tree and the fruit, jesus and his atonement and not on the bad filthliness. This was perfect for me at this time. I had been focusing on the bad things, the filthiness and forgetting all the good. There really is so much good as we find it. Good in every day if we look for it. So i made the decision to look for the good. I know that Christ lives. HE is here. Ele esta aqui. And he loves us. I know as i focus on him all will be better and my mission will be full of more joy.

Tons of pictures

Oi!

How is everyone this week?? I hope good! this week i am writing this email to you in Ribeira Grande... dont worry i didnt get transfered. haha but we got permission to go on a district activity to here and it is BEAUTIFUL. Sooo amazing. We are in paradise here in cabo verde. and i WISH i could send pictures but i still do not know how... haha but its going to happen someday you will see the beauties of cabo verde.

So this week we had a baptism. YAYAYAYA. It was the baptism of lucas... remember lucas?? He is the one who as of last week didnt have permission from his parents to get baptized. WELL he got permission. And we passed by multiple times this past week. So let me review the story :)

So we passed by a lot.. maybe excessively but when the mom didnt want to talk to us we had lessons with lucas and his older siblings and just asked them to keep praying and reading and showing god our faith and he will show us miracles. So they kept doing that. The mom was getting better as the week went on. We kept saying nice things and buying the donuts that she sells... to buy a donut works miracles here...

so we kept doing that and then on thursday we still didnt have permission. turns out we got to talk with the dad. WE were on divisions and i was with our sister training leader from sao vicente. We find his dad in the street and start talking to him and asking him to listen to lucas and what he wants to do to better follow christ and then support him in this decision. his dad understood and said they would talk that night together. somehow it softened his mom and his dad i think and the next day lucas said he could be baptized! We were soooo happy for him. And he is awesome.

So that was a miracles. yet another miracle. :) This work is full of miracles. i love you all.

I know this is the work of the lord and i know we need to trust in him to do it.

Today i wont send a big letter because i found out how to send pictures and i want time to send all of them. I love you all so much!

Conference weekend

Dear Family and Friends!

This week went by way to fast. I think it is because i was so excited for conference all week that it just flew by and conference flew by too. i cant believe it is already over. I loved it... it was in portuguese so i admit i didnt understand a whole lot but it was stilll great! :) Always is. I know like everyone else that the spirit we feel when prophets and apostles speak is the real teacher. And even though i didnt get all the words in Elder Hollands talk... WOW! How incredible. I remember the feelings i felt and it was great. I know my Savior lives.

So a little bit about this week... We found some new awesome investigators. This new area is full of gold! One person i would like to talk about is Lucas. Lucas is 14 and his older brother, ivan, was baptized about a month and a week ago. Lucas came to the baptism and i remember wishing that we could teach him but i knew he lived in a different area. Well when we got to this new area we made sure to pass by. We have started teaching him and he has a baptismal date and he is solid! He is only 14 but acts older and mature about all of this. He even tries to speak portuguese to us and it is really sweet. And when he prays he really prays. He even did some missionary work the other day. He invited his friend to do some studies with us. Turns out his friend has a sister as a member. A great reference from Lucas! so lucas came to conferencia geral as well. He came to two sessions even and said he really enjoyed them. I love people who say they will do something and do it. That is one problem here in cabo verde. i swear we invited about 80 people to conference and none of which showed up. Even when we passed by and reminded a few of them everyday... nada! Frustrating. How could you not be excited to watch the words of a living prophet?? i do not know!!!

Anyway... So Lucas is great and progressing really well. I remember as we were doing some last minute inviting to conference on our way to the church before the last session we saw a few young less active members. We invited them and they looked like they werent going to come... i was getting teared up too. we just shared our testimony on prophets and they said ok... looked a little bad about it but went their seperate ways. As we walked to church i just thought about how people do not understand what is really important on the earth today! But then i saw Lucas... i thought that at least one... one person came and kept thier committments. even when none of his famiy came with him, even though he didnt have the nicest things to wear, even with all that... he came. And that gave me hope. tender mercies like that always give me hope.

Another thing that was great this week is i realized the importance of contacting. A few months ago i remember sitting in a store waiting to pay our water bill and some guy walked in. i remember being in some kind of bad mood. thinking i wasnt going to talk to him... but then i just felt like i should. so we talked and we found out that he was actually a member. for like 20 years he has been inactive. So we invited him back but he lived in the other area and he kinda got forgotten. WELL this week we were walking past a few houses and we saw another person we had contacted a few weeks ago. We got talking and he said he needed to go to his uncles house. We were about to leave, but then noticed that his uncles house was the same house we had contacted a few days earlier! So we decided to walk in with him and remind them that we would be stopping by in a few days and get to know the boyfriend because we just contacted his girlfriend and their son... well guess who walked up to the door... THE same guy who we contacted about 2 months ago! The less active! He remembered us too! I got super excited and said that we left a book of mormon with his wife and he said he would start reading it again and i just got super excited. What a miracle. All those contacts intertwined into one big family that now has a huge potential to change thier life. They went out of town for easter but we are going to talk to them this week. i hope it goes great and he is ready to come back to church. and baptize his girlfriend and get married first too :)

Well i know this church is true. I know this is the only way!!! I loved the endure to the end talk in the last session! I know that we have made promises with our father in heaven and he has promised us things as well according to our faithfullness. Endure to the End everyone. Even when it is hard. And pray and read. I have really made a goal to better my prayers. Heavenly father is actually listening. i know he is. And we can give accounting to him each day and night. He is listening and giving us direction through his spirit.

Ola-a lot of traveling

Ola!

This week was a lot of traveling.! Finally on friday morning we got to porto novo! And then it was work work work... and now on monday we get a little time to relax and prepare for a great week! So my new companion is Sister Kohlert. She is from Lindon, UT. She is super cute and fun! We are going to have a great time together! She is being patient with herself and the language which is good. But she is amazing at the language already! It is amazing to see the gift of tongues in action. Only 6 weeks of ever hearing portuguese and here people are teaching other about the gospel, how to pray, and baring testimony very powerfully. During a contact on the street we were talking to people and i looked to Sister kohlert and gave her that "say something" look and she started baring her testimony and she simply said " I know that jesus christ lives" and the spirit was so strong i started to get tears in my eyes. The people we contacted stopped with there excuses to and said "we will go to church." We also marked to pass by them another day as well. Sadly they didnt actually come to church... how quickly people forget how they feel... but we will follow up with them. Moral of the story is that it is amazing how simply and powerfully a testimony of the savior can be.

So after a lot of travels we made it back to our house... it wasnt as much as a disaster as it was before. So that is a plus! haha But we got some things set up and got right to planning and looking through our new area book! We have so many awesome people in the new area! The other sisters were so lucky. I am super excited to work over there. There are also ALOT of members too! So a lot of references! I got the chance to spend a few hours with the sister training leaders in sao vincente before i got on my flight and they are opening a new area. I got to see how they did things with this new area. And they looked for ways to serve, contacted the world, and asked for references from everyone! So that is our goal for this week. Ask for references from everyone!

With one of our new investigators we got someone who will be baptized this week. It is actually a family pretty much! A mom and her daughter! They are super adorable. We got to talk to them a few times this week and they are super excited for baptism! We went by their house to pick them up for church and they were already on their way. It was so good to see. We didnt have to wake anyone up or invite them to show up late, they were already on thier way and they made it there even before a lot of the members :)

speaking of church! It was AMAZING yesterday! I know it was the work of the Lord to bring elders here to porto novo! Yesterday 5 of the investigators sister zimbelman and i had in the other area came to church. We had been teaching some of them for months and they didnt come. But they came yesterday and it was soooo goooo to see them. They all looked so happy to be there too! Also another miracle.. one of these investigators named Anna. I think i talked about her a long time ago. Well Sis Zimbelman and i never really said good bye to her. So as i was sitting in relief society one of the members tells me to come to the door. I open up the door and there stand Anna! I dont know why put i just started crying. It is amazing the love you develop for these people. She is an eternal friend. And i know she will get baptized one day! I just hope it is while i am here. She has a lot of fears but she came to church yesterday and that was huge! i know the elders will take care of her! Also with church we had NINE investigators! Some of them were investigators that i thought were members but apparently they are not. haha. So with this new area we got some people we got to baptize!

We also have another goal for baptism. His name is Adilson. We have lessons with him in english because he likes to speak english. Sister kohlert was happy about that and she shared a story in the lesson that was really special. Adilson doesnt see why he needs to be baptized again if he was already baptized in the catholic church! Well we have talked about this doubt a lot. Finally we just said he needs to decide if the book of mormon is true or not. Because if the book of mormon is true than joseph smith was a prophet and he had the power and authortity to baptize and now others in the church have this authority! Simple. All questions can be answered with the book of mormon. i know that book is true. And it has power.

I love you all

Cool subject

Dear everyone,

Yes! i finally have a cool subject... Because this week is CRAZY! hahaha so as you all know that this week was transfers... let me start with describing a few things so everyone can understand. So in my area of porto novo we have 2 sets of sisters. So 4 missionaries. The other sisters live in a different zone and they work in the south part of porto novo. I work in the north part and we have a different house. This house is amazing. the best house in the mission really. It has hot water-- no houses have hot water. It has great water pressure too! It is just super booji! And another thing about the Ward... we have a LOT and i mean a LOT of prospective elders. So all guys who want to teach with us... but they cant unless we have another women... and NO women will teach with us. So that has been a big problem. and also with these 2 areas... we are divided by one road. and in both of our areas we have big ribieras... or these big ditches that seperate zones.

Ok now that you all understand let me talk about transfers! So sister zimbelman and i recieved a call on saturday night... not expecting a call a day early but it was president. eeek! Well we knew we wouldnt stay together for one more transfer but we didnt know what would happen. So sister zimbelman finds out first she is getting sent to Fogo to be a sister training leader! Totally saw that coming. She is awesome!! And then i get the phone and president tells me i am TRAINING... An american! Sister Colhert... i think. something like that. BUT wait! That wasnt all. He also said i will be moving to the other sisters house that night because we are recieving elders in porto novo. We recieved one of the former assitentes to the president and he is white washing the area so that they can work with elders! yup... so... I had about one night and a day to move out of my house. Well let me tell you about the others sisters house... NO HOT WATER... i will try not to cry. and also no water pressure... and also... they dont have enough furniture so i am using boxes for my clothes. oh my goodness. haha so right now the house is a disaster completely because they had this one room... called the cave of wonders that had all sorts of trash. so we had to clean it out to use as a study room for one of us... and let me tell you it was a cave of wonders. haha so the house has all sorts of crazy stuff. and you know how it is when things just are not tidy... you feel stress. imagine my stress level right now. haha dont even worry.

Ok so the elderes are taking part of my area. And i am half white wasing and training at the same time as i will be taking part of the sisters area. WAHOO. I was soooooo excited when i got the call... NOT! That is a lie... i was pretty upset. My idea of these next transfers was to stay in my pretty little area and enjoy my pretty little house and have a new comp and work things out and just stay in my comfort zone. That is NOT what the lord had in store... and i didnt have faith because really when i got the call i didnt think it was what the lord had in store and something was messed up. So saturday night i prayed a Lot. a lot a lot a lot. i dont think i slept more than 2 hours. ha

Oh and the new areas are split up by the riberias... ok now you all know.

Anyway. I was pretty upset saturday night. I did not feel a desire to be in the others sisters house. i love them, but we are so different and do things so differently. And that house is just always not clean so we are definitley going to organize some things. but i just knew it would be a lot of work. and with training too. i wanted to help my greenie feel comfortable and not stressed out like i was feeling. So i knew we had been talking a lot about desires and faith this week and we talked about the atonement in district meeting and how we have to help our investigators understand the atonement so that they will have this desire to keep the commandements. So we taught this a lot this week. i even noticed how the spirit was helping me understand the atonement better as we taught about it. And as i was pouting about transfers i remembered what i had been teaching the investigators is exactly what i needed right then. I need to change my desires, my attitude and keep the commandments or the committments that the lord had given me. And i need to trust in the atonement. As i said it is amazing how we can truly change our desires as we use christ... i prayed a lot that in the morning i would feel peace and an excitement to take on this adventure. And you know what... i changed. I can honestly say now i am excited. i KNOW it will be so hard. haah but this is how i am going to change and be the missionary the lord needs me to be. we change in difficult times. So i am ready and excited! Right now i am with another sister on a different island as she waits for her companion to get here. it will be fun to teach in her area for a few days. i leave to santiago, praia in a few days to pick up my greenie\daughter... and we will hopefully get back to our area on saturday or friday!

And funny story about all this... the elderes zone leaders picked me up from the boat place to take me to my new sister for a few days. and we accidentely left my bag in the taxi... yeah... i know. So we prayed. haha and laughed really hard. and hoped the taxi guy would come back. so we about stopped every taxi asking if anyone knew a guy who lived in a certain zone. we didnt ask him his name! next time we will! Always ask the taxi drivers their name and always contact everyone! lesson learned. oh... we got the bag back because he happened to return. The lord is watching over us. And also a funny story about this week... i heard a spanish guy speaking on a television ( i swear i was not watching it... but it was on.. soo... ) Anyway i saw this spanish guy and he had portuguese subtitles. The first thing i thought was "the poor guy needs subtitles because he has speach problems" hahahah and then i realized he wasnt speaking portuguese...hahaha as missionaries in cabo verde we are just so used to hearing creole and pretending we can understand everything everyone is saying... But yeah whitney... spanish people have speach problems.

Great birthday week

Dear Familia e Amigos,

Ola! First of all thank you to everyone who wished me happy birthday! It was a great day! We had divisons that day so i was with one of our sister training leaders Sister Ellsworth! It was great and i learned a lot from her. And she is great at inventing foods so she made brownies for us! Also the other sisters made me a cake. My favorite cake in cabo verde... Chocolate and orange! Hmm hmm good! I have a picture but yet again the computer to send pics is not exactly working so i cant send it. :( hopefully next week! But yes it was very good! Cant complain :) Only that i feel a lot older now. It is quite sad.

So this week! Divisions was amazing. I learned a lot from our sister training leaders. So yes divisions was amazing! Sister Ellsworth taught me a lot. Sometimes i get a little discouraged because they are so amazing, and then there is me. But i guess i have to remember this is why they are the leaders. Maybe one day i can be a great missionary like they are. Study and prayer! This week we also had a zone meeting in sao vicente! It was a great zone meeting! We talked about faith. So last week we got a letter from president and he expressed how he felt about the month of february. We didnt reach our goal for baptisms... we werenºt even really close actually. So he said he really prayed and thought about it. And he said that he feels as if we are being very obedient. we are one of the most obedient group of this mission. but he said we lack desire and faith! That took us a little by surprise. Me at least. So this past week was a lot of self evaluating on my faith and desires. i have realized a lot of things about myself that i didnt see before. It is amazing how the Lord works.

But this week i realized that i need to increase my faith and one way for me to do that is to trust in the Lord more. I have been studying in Alma about the boss missionaries in those chapters. Ammon, Alma, Amuleque, Aaron... so on. And i just finished one of the stories about how the people of anti-nefi-lehis had buried their weapons of war but the laminites were coming to war against them. They decided they would rather die righteous than to take up arms. Wow the faith! They knew the Lord would keep his promises unto them as they kept their covenants. So as the laminites were coming upon them with their weapons they prayed. Well there were a few that were killed... but then eventually the laminites realized that they were not going to fight back and their hearts were softened. They stopped warring against them. And many of them were converted to the lord and repented of their sins. I love the end of this chapter as it says the lord works by his own means to bring about his purposes... something a long those lines. It is Alma chapter 24:27... But wow! This hit me. This is the Work of the Lord we are doing here in Cabo verde. The work of the lord we are doing throughout the world. It is His work. And he will work by his means to bring about this great work! He has given me the great opportunity to be a representitive of him and to work in this part of the world. But i need to Trust in him fully and realize he is doing his work. I trust in myself too much sometimes. And then i get discouraged or upset because i cant do all i want to do on my own. But there is good news. I am not alone. i am never alone, i never was, and never will be! This is the work of the lord and i have seen his hand in this work. it is amazing the transformation in peoples lives. Always a miracle. God is a god of miracles! :) So to increase my faith i need to change who i am trusting in. And that is in the Lord! I know he is hastening his work.

I love the scriptures so much and the great stories they have! I have read the book of mormon many times but just now... as i read in portuguese, am i starting to get the story and get excited. I am even at the point where i am not sure what happens next and i get excited to read every morning... maybe that is because it is in portuguese and it feels different! But also one thing that has helped is having a blank copy! So i dont see my notes ahead of time and i can make new notes and get new revelation. I think that would be a great idea if some of you want to read the book of mormon again! Get a new copy and start reading. It is very exciting :)

I am so grateful for this work! We had some great lessons this week. We started talking to a family. They are not married, but the wife is super super interested. The husband has cheio (a lot) of work but we are still going to pray that everytime we meet he is there! And their kids are always super excited too! I love families.

Love you all!
